Three Ways to Kick Start Your Career in the New Year

TIP #1: Create a special project.

In October, I created Letters from Men Who Go to Strip Clubs, an online project featuring anonymous letters that strip club patrons send me about why they pay ladies to give them lap dances.

This is the most popular Letters Project installment I’ve created, the most popular being Letters from Johns, which I launched in 2008. These projects are cheap and easy to create, and they fit with my career as a freelance writer.

Since the Strip Clubs project was launched, I’ve posted 22 letters, Salon interviewed me about it, it will be featured in an upcoming issue of Playboy magazine, I’ll be talking about it on Canadian radio next month, and I’ll be profiled in a British newspaper next year because of it.

Surely, I’m not recommending you go seeking emails from sex work clients, but maybe there’s a project you’ve been wanting to start and haven’t. Why not now? That novel, that yarn bombing, that social networking for C-suite woman start up.
